New York grants for nonprofits: where to look
New York moved its entire grant process into the Statewide Financial System in 2024 and shut the old Grants Gateway in early 2025. The result is one searchable, filterable list of state opportunities and one application system, but with a prequalification step that must be complete before the due date and renewed every year. If you're new to New York State funding, prequalify first and search second.

Official state grant portal
New York State Grants Management: find grant opportunities, run by New York State through the Statewide Financial System (SFS).
The live search runs inside the SFS Vendor Portal and needs no login to browse: filter anticipated, available and closed opportunities by eligible applicant type (including not-for-profit), funding agency, service area and due date, and sign up for email alerts by service area. Applying requires SFS registration and prequalification.
- Grants Management guidance site: prequalification rules, SFS training, transition notices
Open data: None on data.ny.gov; the open-data portal carries past-award datasets only.
Federal grants open to New York nonprofits
Federal funding is listed on grants.gov; filter by eligibility "Nonprofits having a 501(c)(3) status" and search your program area. Much federal money also passes through New York state agencies as pass-through grants, which show up on the agency pages above rather than on grants.gov.
Statewide resources
- Nonprofit association: New York Council of Nonprofits (NYCON), membership association since 1927 with 3,000-plus members
- Charity registration and lookup: Attorney General Charities Bureau: registry search. Registration and the annual CHAR500 filing; agencies check this during prequalification.
- Community foundations: NY Funders Alliance, statewide network of community foundations, United Ways and family foundations
Worth knowing
- Prequalification in SFS requires the certificate of incorporation, IRS determination letter, most recent Form 990, audit or review, CHAR500 and CHAR410 filings, board profile, bylaws and org chart; review takes roughly 5-10 business days and must be renewed as filings expire.
- All new state solicitations have been issued in SFS since January 2024; anything still pointing you to Grants Gateway is out of date.
- The Executive Chamber's Nonprofit Unit convenes the Not-for-Profit Contracting Advisory Committee and publishes its materials on the Grants Management site.
- Charities soliciting in New York register and file annually with the Attorney General's Charities Bureau; a lapsed registration will block prequalification.
Avoiding scams
The rules don't change by state: real grants never charge a fee, never arrive as an award for something you didn't apply for, and are always findable on the agency's own site. Our grant scams guide and 60-second checklist apply in New York exactly as in California.
