New Jersey grants for nonprofits: where to look
New Jersey centralizes the application but not the search. Most state grant applications go through SAGE, but SAGE is a login-only system with no public opportunity list, so finding grants means watching each department's own page. The Department of Community Affairs and the Department of State are the two that most consistently fund community nonprofits.

No central state grant portal
New Jersey does not run a single portal that lists every state agency's open grants the way California does. Opportunities are posted agency by agency. These are the agencies that most often fund nonprofits:
- Department of Community Affairs: grants and resources for nonprofits: the agency most oriented toward community nonprofits
- Department of State: grants and volunteer information: Arts Council, Historical Commission, Cultural Trust, faith-based initiatives, AmeriCorps
- State Council on the Arts: grant programs: General Operating Support runs on three-year terms
- Department of Human Services: notices of funds available: human-services providers, mostly via NOFAs and RFPs
- Department of Health: grants
- Department of Education: grant opportunities (NGOs)
- SAGE: System for Administering Grants Electronically: where most state applications are submitted; login required, register at least a week before a deadline
Open data: None on data.nj.gov. SAGE's program search sits behind the login, so there is no public list to build from.
Federal grants open to New Jersey nonprofits
Federal funding is listed on grants.gov; filter by eligibility "Nonprofits having a 501(c)(3) status" and search your program area. Much federal money also passes through New Jersey state agencies as pass-through grants, which show up on the agency pages above rather than on grants.gov.
Statewide resources
- Nonprofit association: New Jersey Center for Nonprofits
- Charity registration and lookup: Division of Consumer Affairs, Charities Registration Section. Public directory of registered charities at nj.gov/lps/ca2/charities, updated weekly.
- Community foundations: Community Foundation of New Jersey, a single statewide community foundation; the Council of New Jersey Grantmakers (cnjg.org) is the funder association
Worth knowing
- Register for a SAGE user ID well before you need it; the Department of State advises at least a week ahead of any deadline, and the Department of Community Affairs runs its own SAGE instance.
- Human Services and Health fund providers mainly through notices of funds available and RFPs, which read more like contracts than grants.
- Unlike most states, New Jersey has one statewide community foundation rather than a county network.
- Charities operating in New Jersey register under the Charitable Registration and Investigation Act and file annual financial reports with the Division of Consumer Affairs.
Avoiding scams
The rules don't change by state: real grants never charge a fee, never arrive as an award for something you didn't apply for, and are always findable on the agency's own site. Our grant scams guide and 60-second checklist apply in New Jersey exactly as in California.
