Illinois grants for nonprofits: where to look
Illinois is one of the more structured states for nonprofits seeking state money: every state award, whatever its funding source, runs under the Grant Accountability and Transparency Act (GATA), and the open opportunities are listed in one public catalog. The price of that structure is a pre-qualification process you must complete before any agency can award you anything, so start it before you find the grant you want.

Official state grant portal
Catalog of State Financial Assistance (CSFA): open funding opportunities, run by the Grant Accountability and Transparency Unit in the Governor's Office of Management and Budget.
A public table of open Notices of Funding Opportunity (about 120 at our last check) showing title, agency, application window and award range, with keyword search and no login to browse. There is no applicant-type filter, so read each notice's eligibility. A weekly NOFO email digest is available by sending a blank email to [email protected].
- GATA program site (rules, training, Grantee Portal): where pre-qualification happens
Open data: The opportunity list is an HTML table only; no dataset or API on data.illinois.gov. Illinois listings would need a scraper, which is why they aren't on this site yet.
Federal grants open to Illinois nonprofits
Federal funding is listed on grants.gov; filter by eligibility "Nonprofits having a 501(c)(3) status" and search your program area. Much federal money also passes through Illinois state agencies as pass-through grants, which show up on the agency pages above rather than on grants.gov.
Statewide resources
- Nonprofit association: Forefront, statewide association for both nonprofits and grantmakers
- Charity registration and lookup: Illinois Attorney General, Charitable Trust Bureau. Online filing at charitable.illinoisattorneygeneral.gov.
- Community foundations: Alliance of Illinois Community Foundations, about 35 community foundations statewide
Worth knowing
- GATA applies the federal Uniform Guidance (2 CFR 200) to all state awards, including state-funded ones.
- Pre-qualification requires an Illinois.gov account, Grantee Portal registration, an active SAM.gov registration with a UEI, good standing with the Illinois Secretary of State, and absence from the state Stop Payment and HFS sanctions lists.
- Once registered you complete one annual Internal Controls Questionnaire that all state agencies share; each awarding agency can still add award-specific conditions after its own risk assessment.
- Many notices are applied for through the AmpliFund-based Grant Management System reached from the Grantee Portal, not on the agency's own site.
Avoiding scams
The rules don't change by state: real grants never charge a fee, never arrive as an award for something you didn't apply for, and are always findable on the agency's own site. Our grant scams guide and 60-second checklist apply in Illinois exactly as in California.
