Georgia grants for nonprofits: where to look
Georgia has no statewide grant search or alert system. The Governor's Office of Planning and Budget runs a portal, but it covers only OPB-administered money, mostly federal relief, and registration is by invitation. In practice, state funding reaches nonprofits as federal pass-through re-granted by agencies like the Criminal Justice Coordinating Council and GEMA, and the best single list of what's open is kept by the Georgia Center for Nonprofits rather than by the state.

No central state grant portal
Georgia does not run a single portal that lists every state agency's open grants the way California does. Opportunities are posted agency by agency. These are the agencies that most often fund nonprofits:
- Criminal Justice Coordinating Council: grants: VOCA, VAWA, Byrne-JAG and family-violence subgrants; the largest re-granter to nonprofits
- GEMA/Homeland Security: preparedness grants: includes the Nonprofit Security Grant Program
- Department of Community Affairs: funding programs: housing, community and economic development
- Georgia Council for the Arts: grants: recurring annual cycles with published guidelines
- Georgia Center for Nonprofits: funding roundup: a monthly-updated list of opportunities maintained by the state association
- Georgia Grants Portal (OPB): limited to OPB-administered funds, mostly federal relief; invitation-code registration
Open data: None. Open Georgia publishes salaries and payments but no grant opportunities or awards.
Federal grants open to Georgia nonprofits
Federal funding is listed on grants.gov; filter by eligibility "Nonprofits having a 501(c)(3) status" and search your program area. Much federal money also passes through Georgia state agencies as pass-through grants, which show up on the agency pages above rather than on grants.gov.
Statewide resources
- Nonprofit association: Georgia Center for Nonprofits
- Charity registration and lookup: Secretary of State, Charities Division. Register before soliciting (Form C-100, $35), renew every 24 months; 'Verify a Charitable Org' lookup on the same page.
- Community foundations: Georgia Grantmakers Alliance, statewide funder network; no public community-foundation list exists
Worth knowing
- Victim services, justice and public-safety nonprofits should watch CJCC first; it administers the federal formula programs that fund most of that sector in Georgia.
- The Arts Council and DCA run predictable annual cycles; agencies like Human Services tend to announce one-off cycles by press release, so a news alert on the agency name is worth setting.
- Charity registration is with the Secretary of State, not the Attorney General, and lapses every two years if not renewed.
Avoiding scams
The rules don't change by state: real grants never charge a fee, never arrive as an award for something you didn't apply for, and are always findable on the agency's own site. Our grant scams guide and 60-second checklist apply in Georgia exactly as in California.
