Florida grants for nonprofits: where to look
Florida is a state where you have to know which door to knock on. There is no central grants portal: each agency announces and runs its own programs, and a large share of state money reaches nonprofits through line items in the annual General Appropriations Act and agency contracts rather than open competitive rounds. The agencies below are where most nonprofit-eligible competitive programs live.
Status on this site: we don't list Florida grants yet. This page points you to the official sources so you can search today; get one email when Florida listings go live.
No central state grant portal
Florida does not run a single portal that lists every state agency's open grants the way California does. Opportunities are posted agency by agency. These are the agencies that most often fund nonprofits:
- Florida Department of State: DOS Grants: one application system for Arts & Culture, Historical Resources, Library & Information Services; the only cross-division grant system in state government
- Division of Arts and Culture grant programs: general program support and specific cultural grants
- Volunteer Florida: grant opportunities: AmeriCorps, Volunteer Generation Fund, Rural Community Assets Fund, disaster programs
- Department of Environmental Protection: land and recreation grants: Florida Communities Trust, FRDAP, LWCF, Recreational Trails
- Department of Law Enforcement: criminal justice grants: Byrne JAG, PSN, RSAT and state financial assistance
Open data: None, because there is no central listing. The Department of Financial Services' FACTS system (facts.fldfs.com) is a public record of grants already awarded, useful for seeing who got state money, but it lists nothing open.
Federal grants open to Florida nonprofits
Federal funding is listed on grants.gov; filter by eligibility "Nonprofits having a 501(c)(3) status" and search your program area. Much federal money also passes through Florida state agencies as pass-through grants, which show up on the agency pages above rather than on grants.gov.
Statewide resources
- Nonprofit association: Florida Nonprofit Alliance
- Charity registration and lookup: FDACS Check-A-Charity. Florida registers soliciting charities with the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, not the Attorney General; registration is annual.
- Community foundations: Council on Foundations community foundation locator (Florida), about 35 Florida community foundations; the Florida Philanthropic Network is the statewide grantmaker association
Worth knowing
- The Department of State's DOS Grants system is the one place in Florida government where several grant programs share an account, search and application; everything else is agency by agency.
- Legislative member projects and recurring appropriations are a major channel for nonprofit funding and run on the legislative calendar (session begins in January in odd years, March in even years), not on a grants calendar.
- Awarded state contracts and grants are searchable in FACTS, which is a good way to find which agencies have funded organizations like yours.
- Charity registration is with FDACS under the Solicitation of Contributions Act and must be renewed each year.
Avoiding scams
The rules don't change by state: real grants never charge a fee, never arrive as an award for something you didn't apply for, and are always findable on the agency's own site. Our grant scams guide and 60-second checklist apply in Florida exactly as in California.
